American country music legend Dolly Parton, whose six-decade career produced global hits, including Jolene, 9 to 5, and I Will Always Love You, has died at the age of 80.
Parton’s family announced her death on Tuesday, describing the singer-songwriter as an inspiration to generations of musicians and artists.

“Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus,” her nephew said in a video shared on social media.
Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, said Parton “opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians, and dreamers from every walk of life”, adding that her example showed that “anything was possible”.

The family did not disclose the cause of death.
Health concerns
Parton had recently spoken publicly about health difficulties and had stepped back from some professional commitments.
In May, she announced the cancellation of a series of planned Las Vegas performances, saying she was undergoing treatment for an unspecified health condition.
In videos shared on social media, Parton said her treatment was progressing but that she was not yet ready to return to the stage.
Her death comes a year after that of her husband, Carl Dean, whom she married in 1966. Dean largely avoided public attention throughout their marriage.
Penury to Country music stardom
Born Dolly Rebecca Parton on 19 January, 1946, in Sevierville, Tennessee, Parton was the fourth of 12 children raised in a low-income family in the Great Smoky Mountains.
Music became an early escape from poverty. She began writing songs as a child and performed for local audiences before making her debut at the Grand Ole Opry at 13.
After graduating from high school, she moved to Nashville, the centre of American country music, determined to build a career as a songwriter and performer.
Her breakthrough came after joining Porter Wagoner’s television programme in 1967. The show introduced her to millions of viewers and helped establish her as one of country music’s most recognisable performers.
Parton later developed a reputation not only for her distinctive soprano voice but also for her songwriting ability. She once estimated that she had written around 3,000 songs during her career.
Generational hits
Among her best-known songs was ‘Coat of Many Colours,’ a deeply personal account of her childhood and her family’s struggle with poverty.
Her 1973 song ‘Jolene’ became one of country music’s most enduring standards, while ‘I Will Always Love You’ achieved even greater international success after Whitney Houston recorded it for the 1992 film The Bodyguard.
Houston’s version became one of the biggest-selling singles in music history and introduced Parton’s songwriting to a worldwide audience.
Parton recorded 49 studio albums and more than 100 compilation and collaborative albums. She achieved 26 number-one country hits, won 10 Grammy Awards and received numerous other honours.
Her success also extended beyond country music. She reached the top of the pop charts with songs including Islands in the Stream” and established herself as an actress through films such as 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias.
Entertainment empire
Parton’s influence stretched far beyond music.
In 1986, she opened Dollywood, a theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, which became one of the most successful entertainment and tourism ventures associated with a music star.
She also established businesses in publishing and music production and expanded her brand into other areas of entertainment and consumer products.
Her appearance became another defining part of her public image. Known for her elaborate hairstyles, glamorous clothes and distinctive personality, Parton openly embraced her carefully crafted image while insisting that her appearance never defined the extent of her talent.
“I love makeup, I love clothes, and I have the personality that can pull it off,” she told National Public Radio in 2001.
Philanthropy, lasting influence
Parton also used her wealth and influence to support education, healthcare and literacy.
In 2020, she donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University, helping support research that contributed to the development of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine.

Her Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library literacy programme has distributed millions of books to children around the world, reflecting her long-standing commitment to education.
Parton received the Kennedy Centre Honour in 2006 and was later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, after initially expressing reservations about accepting the honour.
Her songs were recorded by artistes across generations and genres, including Whitney Houston, Shania Twain, Sinéad O’Connor and The White Stripes.
For more than half a century, Parton remained one of the most recognisable figures in American entertainment, combining songwriting, performance, business and philanthropy.
