The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) on Wednesday mourned veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, describing him as a committed journalist who contributed to the growth of Nigeria’s media industry.
Mr Oladipo died on Tuesday in Lagos. He was 56 years old.

In separate statements issued after his death, the two media organisations highlighted his contributions to journalism, press freedom and the development of online publishing in Nigeria.
IPI: Oladipo was committed to press freedom
IPI Nigeria described Mr Oladipo as an accomplished journalist, publisher and entrepreneur who remained committed to press freedom throughout his career.

In a statement signed by its president, Musikilu Mojeed, IPI Nigeria said Mr Oladipo was dependable, resourceful and deeply committed to professional journalism.
The institute said his qualities led to his appointment as chairman of its Programmes Committee in 2024.
According to the institute, Mr Oladipo remained active in the institute’s activities despite the demands of running The Eagle Online, which he founded and published.

It said he contributed to the success of its 2025 Annual General Meeting and Conference and was a key member of the planning committee for the 2026 edition.
“At just 56, Mr Oladipo leaves behind an indelible legacy in Nigeria’s media industry, having made significant contributions across both traditional and digital journalism. His distinguished career included stints with Newswatch, The Punch, The Compass, Nigerian Tribune and The Sun, before he founded The Eagle Online about a decade and a half ago,” the statement read.
The institute recalled an event earlier in August when Mr Oladipo travelled from Lagos to Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, to represent IPI Nigeria at an engagement despite having another previously scheduled commitment in Lagos on the same day.
IPI Nigeria said the decision reflected his commitment to the institute and the journalism profession.
“His death is a profound loss not only to his family and colleagues but also to the Nigerian media community and the broader struggle for press freedom and professional journalism. IPI Nigeria has lost a dependable colleague, a passionate advocate and a trusted friend,” the statement added.
GOCOP recalls four years of leadership
GOCOP also described Mr Oladipo’s death as a loss to the guild and the wider Nigerian media community.
Mr Oladipo served as president of GOCOP from 2017 to 2021, during a period when online publishing was expanding rapidly in Nigeria.
The guild said he was among the publishers who helped shape the organisation during its formative years, bringing his experience from traditional journalism into the emerging digital media space.
GOCOP President Danlami Nmodu said Mr Oladipo played an important role in establishing online publishers as a significant part of Nigeria’s media industry.
“Dotun played an important role in the development of GOCOP. He led the Guild for four years at a time when there was still a lot of work to be done to establish online publishers as an important part of the media. His contribution will always be remembered,” Mr Nmodu said.
He described Mr Oladipo as a journalist who understood both the editorial and business sides of publishing.
“Dotun understood journalism and he understood the business of publishing. He was passionate about the place of online media in Nigeria and he gave his time to the growth of the Guild. We are saddened by his passing,” Mr Nmodu added..
Career spanning traditional, digital media
Mr Oladipo’s journalism career predated the emergence of online platforms as a major source of news in Nigeria.
He worked with several mainstream media organisations, including Newswatch, PUNCH, Nigerian Compass, Nigerian Tribune and The Sun, before moving into digital publishing.
He later founded The Eagle Online, where he served as publisher.
His transition from traditional newsrooms to online publishing came as the internet and social media were rapidly changing how Nigerians accessed and consumed news.
