The Super Falcons of Nigeria and Banyana Banyana of South Africa meet again on Thursday with their 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup hopes hanging by a thread, in a high-stakes CAF play-off that neither side expected to be playing.
The two African heavyweights were supposed to be preparing for the already played Wednesday WAFCON semi-finals and automatic qualification for the World Cup in Brazil. Instead, both suffered quarter-final defeats and must now fight through another route to keep their global ambitions alive.

Nigeria were beaten 1-0 by Cameroon, while South Africa lost 2-1 to hosts Morocco. The four quarter-final winners secured automatic World Cup qualification, leaving Nigeria and South Africa among the defeated teams forced into the play-off pathway.
Thursday’s winner will advance to FIFA’s six-team Inter-Confederation Play-Off Tournament. Three World Cup places will eventually be available there, meaning victory in Casablanca will not book a direct ticket to Brazil but will keep that dream alive. The loser, however, will be eliminated from World Cup qualification.

Nigeria’s second chance
For the Super Falcons, the past few days have been about recovering from one of the most painful moments of their WAFCON campaign.
Nigeria entered Morocco as defending champions and the continent’s most successful women’s national team, with 10 WAFCON titles to their name. They are also one of only seven nations to have appeared at every edition of the Women’s World Cup, making Thursday’s encounter significant far beyond the confines of this tournament.

Their WAFCON campaign began disastrously with a 3-2 defeat to debutants Malawi, but they recovered by beating Zambia 1-0 before thrashing Egypt 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals.
Against Cameroon, however, the Super Falcons were undone by Maéva Nyadjou’s free-kick despite creating opportunities of their own.
Coach Justin Madugu has accepted responsibility for the disappointment but insists Nigeria still have a second chance.
“We have this second opportunity. We are still going to do the best that we can. We are not leaving anything out,” Madugu said ahead of the encounter.
“We are going to put in all our best to make sure that at least we put smiles on the faces of our people because we know what it means to all of us as Nigerians.”
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade has also urged her teammates to channel their disappointment into Thursday’s contest rather than dwell on the Cameroon defeat.
“What has happened has happened. There is nothing we can do about that. We cannot control it anymore. It is all about putting ourselves together and getting the loss behind us,” Ajibade said.
Banyana have their own scars
South Africa arrive with a similarly painful memory.
Banyana Banyana had been among the tournament’s strongest sides before their quarter-final meeting with Morocco, but the hosts prevailed 2-1 to end their title challenge.
Like Nigeria, South Africa now have no room for another mistake.
Head coach Desiree Ellis has retained a core group of experienced players, including Thembi Kgatlana, Andile Dhlamini and Linda Motlhalo. South Africa entered the WAFCON as the 2022 champions and among the leading contenders for the title.
Their group-stage campaign was far from perfect. They began with a shock 2-1 defeat to Tanzania, drew 2-2 with Côte d’Ivoire and then responded with a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso to squeeze into the quarter-finals.
The defeat to Morocco means Ellis must now lift her players quickly for another high-pressure assignment.
South Africa defender Karabo Dhlamini has called on Banyana to focus on the opportunity still available rather than allowing the quarter-final defeat to affect them.
Thursday’s winner advances to the Inter-Confederation Play-Off pathway, while the loser’s World Cup dream ends in Morocco.
History adds another layer
This is one of African women’s football’s most familiar rivalries.
Nigeria have the superior overall record, with the two nations having met more than 23 times across WAFCON, qualifiers and friendly matches. The Super Falcons have won 15 of those meetings.
But South Africa have increasingly closed the gap, as they defeated Nigeria 2-1 in their opening match at the 2022 WAFCON before going on to win their first continental title. Nigeria later got their revenge in the qualification race for the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning the two-legged contest 1-0 on aggregate after a 1-0 first-leg victory and a goalless draw in Pretoria.
Those results underline the changing balance between the two sides.
Nigeria remain the traditional powerhouse, but South Africa have developed into genuine contenders and now possess enough quality to punish any lapse.
No room for sentiments
The circumstances surrounding this fixture are uncomfortable for both teams.
Nigeria are used to arriving at this stage of a major competition with a trophy within reach. South Africa are the 2022 African champions and were among the favourites before their quarter-final exit.
Now, history counts for little. The rivalry, the pedigree and the previous meetings will all disappear once the referee blows the opening whistle.

What remains is a single high-pressure battle in Casablanca.
Nigeria need a victory to move one step closer to preserving their unbroken World Cup record. South Africa need the same victory to keep alive their dream of returning to the global stage.
The Super Falcons know what is at stake, the Banyana know it too.
Thursday night is not about who has the richer history. It is about who can handle the pressure, take the chances and survive when the margins become razor thin.
