PREMIUM TIMES’ Journalist, Abdulkareem Mojeed, was one of the three Nigerian journalists celebrated at the second edition of the Nigerian Climate Justice Media Award on Friday.
The award ceremony held in Abuja was organised by the Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSIEP), Oxfam and the African Activists for Climate Justice.

Mr Mojeed emerged the Second Runner Up with his story exposing how conflict with humans endangers Nigeria’s wild elephants. He went home with a N250,000 cash prize and a plaque.
Michael Simire of Environment News emerged as First Runner Up with a N350,000 cash prize and a plaque.

The Winner, Charles Monday of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), went home with a N500,000 cash prize and a plaque.
Nominees
Before the winners emerged, the award organisers listed 10 nominees to include Nkoli Omodu of the African Independent Television (AIT), Anthony Momodu of Arise TV News, Amaechi Onyeama of the Authority Newspaper and Patrick Oluwaseun of Channels Television.
Others are: Michael Simire of Environment News, Abigail Joshua of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Charles Monday of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Joy Onyekwere of Peoples FM and Abdulkareem Mojeed of Premium Times.

Each of the nominees went home with a N100,000 cash prize and a certificate.
Organisers speak
Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of GIFSIEP, David Michael, said the award recognises the journalists’ reporting on climate issues and how it affect people.
In his welcome address, the Director of Oxfam Nigeria, John Makina, said climate change is one of the pressing issues of our time and requires all stakeholders to come together to address it.
Mr Makina said misinformation about climate issues has taken centre stage in climate conversations.
He expressed worries that prominent figures with large followings who do not believe in climate change have continued to spread false information about climate change.
He emphasised the role of the media in disseminating information on the impact of climate change.
He called on journalists to ask the difficult questions about climate change to different stakeholders, particularly policymakers.
“Issues around climate change have consequences that affect the plant and its inhabitants. It is important that the media is involved in this matter,” he said.
“This will help educate the public about the science of climate change and how to address those issues.”
About Mr Mojeed
Mr Mojeed works on the newspaper’s business desk, where he specialises in development journalism, covering topics such as agriculture, food security, climate change, and the environment.
He is also a media trainer with a speciality in agriculture and climate change.
He has contributed significantly to research on the impact of climate change on women farmers in Ghana and Nigeria.
He was in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2022 and 2023, where he provided extensive coverage of the United Nations Conference of the Parties COP27 and 28, respectively.
Since joining PREMIUM TIMES, he has independently published several consequential reports on climate change adaptation, mitigation, financing, land degradation and businesses that have sparked remarkable impacts across the three tiers of government in Nigeria.
Mr Mojeed’s report about the perception of smallholder farmers growing Genetically Modified Crops-GM Crops (Cowpea among others) in Nigeria, was shortlisted for the 2023 True Story award.

He is among five Nigerian journalists that earned grants to tell solution-driven stories for the 2021 Solutions Journalism Network Africa Fellowship. He has also won the Y. Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship of the global environmental news platform, Mongabay.
Mr Mojeed was the only Nigerian journalist selected for the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) Diversity Fellowship in Philadelphia, United States of America in 2024. When he is not working, he likes travelling and enjoys playing and watching football. He has a penchant for books and nature.
