The Police Service Commission (PSC) has conducted promotional exams for more than 400 senior officers across the country.
This was disclosed in a press statement signed by Ikechukwu Ani, the agency’s spokesperson.

According to the statement, the promotional examination was aimed at meeting up with contemporary policing and ensuring that it is by merit, competence and character.
The commission said 56 Chief Superintendents of Police (SP) were recommended for promotion to the next rank of Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACP), while 451 Superintendents were recommended for consideration to the next rank of Chief Superintendents of Police (CSP).

“The candidates were subjected to written examination with Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, Honourable Commissioner representing the Judiciary and DIG Bar. Taiwo Lekanu rtd, fdc, Honourable Commissioner representing the Police and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Police Affairs, Presiding,” the statement read.
The commission described the examination as an “indispensable condition” for promotion in the police.
It noted that this was to ensure that “these police officers are mentally equipped to face the challenges of the 21st century policing in line with global best practices.”
“This is also to ensure that merit, competence, and character counts,” it added.
Two officers who took part in the examination shared their views with PREMIUM TIMES. Their names have been witheld as they were not authorised to speak to the press about it.
“This is the first time PSC is conducting such exam for us,” one officer, a CSP said. “But I believe it is necessary. It keeps you on your toes that promotion is not automatic.”

Another officer, a SP, said: “The questions were multiple choice around policing, judiciary and current affairs.
“It was a fair test of operational knowledge and leadership. I think even the police should adopt the style for the rank and file.”
Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) are expected to appear before the commission on Friday, 19 September for their own round of promotion examination.
As noted in the statement, the commission boss, Hashimu Argungu, a retired deputy inspector general of police has consistently pushed for a dynamic new Police Force for the new Nigeria, which the present government is ambitiously building.
This, the commission, said will enhance a policing system “that will be efficient, effective and dynamic, and ready and prepared to protect lives and properties and fight crimes and criminality.”
