But before a new hero emerges, it’s worth looking back at the select few who’ve already carved their names into CHAN history; not just as winners, but as icons.

Since its inception in 2009, the African Nations Championship (CHAN) has stood out for its unique focus: a competition exclusively for players based in their home countries’ domestic leagues.

While the Africa Cup of Nations celebrates star power from global clubs, CHAN has remained a proving ground for raw, homegrown brilliance.

And in each edition, one player has soared above the rest. One name becomes synonymous with that tournament. One performance sets the tone, shapes the narrative, and leaves a lasting legacy.

Only seven men have ever claimed the title of Best Player of the Tournament. These are the MVPs who redefined expectation and earned a permanent place in the CHAN Hall of Fame.

The CHAN story began in Côte d’Ivoire, and so did the legend of Trésor Mputu. A midfield maestro with outrageous flair and elite vision, Mputu was the heartbeat of a dominant DR Congo side that lifted the inaugural title. His performance didn’t just win the MVP; it set the gold standard for every edition that followed.

2011 – Zouheir Dhaouadi (Tunisia) (Photo Credit: CAF Media)

In Sudan, Zouheir Dhaouadi emerged as Tunisia’s creative genius. Operating with finesse and intelligence, the attacking midfielder not only orchestrated play but also finished as joint top scorer. His leadership and final-third precision powered Tunisia to their first CHAN crown.

South Africa 2014 belonged to Ejike Uzoenyi. With blistering pace and whip-smart crosses from the left wing, Uzoenyi was relentless. Nigeria finished third, but Uzoenyi’s electric performances earned him the MVP and a coveted spot in the Super Eagles squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup; a rare feat for a CHAN player.

Back to CHAN glory went DR Congo; and this time, Meshack Elia led the charge. In Rwanda, his explosive acceleration, ball control, and cold-blooded finishing tore defenses apart. Elia was unstoppable en route to DR Congo’s second title, and his MVP award was never in doubt.

2018 – Ayoub El Kaabi (Morocco) Credit: CAF Media

Ayoub El Kaabi redefined dominance in CHAN 2018. The Moroccan forward scored a record nine goals; including a hat-trick against Guinea, as Morocco lifted the title on home soil. A clinical striker with a predator’s instinct, El Kaabi’s tournament remains the most prolific in CHAN history.

Morocco’s back-to-back titles had a new face in 2020: Soufiane Rahimi. A playmaker and finisher rolled into one, Rahimi’s five goals and consistent threat in attack made him the natural MVP. His performances confirmed Morocco’s growing dominance in the CHAN era.

2022 – Houssem Eddine Mrezigue (Algeria)
2022 – Houssem Eddine Mrezigue (Algeria)

In 2022, Algeria hosted with pride, and Houssem Eddine Mrezigue anchored the midfield with authority. Despite falling just short of the title, Mrezigue’s maturity, composure, and ability to dictate tempo earned him the tournament’s top individual honour. It was a performance that blended grit with class.

A legacy still being written

These seven players weren’t just outstanding, they were defining. Each of them used CHAN as a stage to prove their brilliance, inspire millions, and raise the profile of their domestic leagues.

Some went on to the World Cup. Others became local legends. All of them remain symbols of what CHAN was designed to celebrate: African talent, grown at home, fearless on the big stage.

Now, as CHAN PAMOJA 2024 unfolds across East Africa, a new chapter is waiting to be written. From Dar es Salaam to Kampala, and all the way to Nairobi, the search is on for the next MVP; the next name to join this elite club.

By the time the final whistle blows on 30 August, one more star will etch his name in the CHAN Hall of Fame.

The question is: Who will rise?
