In a significant step to strengthen its nationwide education support initiative, OPay Digital Services Limited has expanded its ₦1.2 billion ten -yesr Scholarship Programme to the University of Jos (UNIJOS). The scheme is designed to ease the financial pressures of tertiary education while empowering undergraduates to pursue academic excellence.

The partnership was formalized during the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between OPay and the management of UNIJOS. Under the agreement, students of the institution will benefit from a ₦60 million scholarship package, designed to provide long-term financial relief and encourage academic excellence.

The Vice Chancellor of University of Jos, Prof Ishaya, who described OPay as one of the most digitally compliant fintech companies in Nigeria, said the scholarship will undoubtedly assist many students who have no financial support to study, while noting the sad experience of some students who were admitted but couldn’t further their education due to lack of financial support.

The Vice Chancellor said, “We appreciate your hands-on partnership. This is a very good initiative from OPay. The future of this country lies in our youth, and particularly, the future lies in education. Obviously, there are many students who want to go to school but have financial challenges, and this kind of initiative would help a lot in ensuring our youth are educated.

“Sometimes students are admitted, but some hardly accept the admission because they don’t have financial support. Universities across the world are all about creating the future, and this is what OPay is doing. I appreciate OPay for this gesture.

“I also understand that OPay is one of the most digitally compliant fintech companies in Nigeria. If you want to open an account today, you can do it without any stress. This is what’s happening in other parts of the world. People who haven’t even gone to school have OPay accounts. I commend you on that. I hope you’ll continue to offer the best services for the country,” Prof Ishaya added.

“Speaking earlier on the purpose of the initiative, OPay’s Head of Partnership, Mr Ikponmwosa Odiase said the company is a socially responsible organisation hence the decision to provide scholarships for the students of tertiary institution across the country, adding that they believe in impacting lives in the country.

“At OPay, we believe in touching lives. We believe that youths and children are the future of Nigeria, and that’s why we’ve come up with this scholarship to empower students in 20 higher institutions across the country. The University of Jos happens to be the 17th institution we’re visiting. We’re giving 20 students of the University of Jos a scholarship for ten years (N300,000) per school year. We want to reach those who need it most – people who are challenged, whether physically or financially, so that they can fully focus on their academics,” he said.

The University of Jos partnership underscores OPay’s broader ₦1.2 billion Ten-Year Scholarship Programme, which is already impacting undergraduates across several higher institutions in Nigeria. Hence reflects OPay’s long-term vision to touch lives, foster academic excellence, and create opportunities for young Nigerians to thrive despite financial or physical challenges.
