Barely two months after making history at Wimbledon, the Nigerian has followed up by qualifying for the US Open Junior Championships main draw, firmly establishing himself on the biggest stages of junior tennis.
At Wimbledon, Ogunsakin became the first Nigerian in decades to compete at the tournament and the first Nigerian in more than a decade to feature in a Grand Slam main draw. Having never played on grass before and with less than a week to acclimatise, he went on to reach the semifinals of the doubles event.

Historic.
But the question after Wimbledon was whether it marked the beginning of something bigger or was merely a one-off.
The US Open has provided an answer.

Ogunsakin came through qualifying with straight-set victories over Poland’s Tymon Litwic, 6-3, 6-0, and Canada’s newly crowned No. 1 junior, Felix Roussel, 6-3, 6-4.
Two Grand Slam main-draw appearances in one season.
And that distinction matters.
For years, Nigeria has served as a pipeline for exceptional talent, particularly in tennis. The challenge has often been turning that talent into sustained international success.
Ogunsakin’s rise represents something slightly different: a Nigerian player not simply participating on the international circuit, but progressing, winning and advancing at major events.
That progress has not happened by accident.

Wimbledon was not a one-off.

And that consistency may be the most important part of Ogunsakin’s emergence.
With the Nigerian flag now appearing on the biggest stages in tennis, Ogunsakin’s journey could represent more than the rise of one player.

It could offer a blueprint.
Nigeria has never lacked tennis talent. The bigger challenge has always been building a sustainable pathway that can take talented young players from local courts to the highest levels of international competition.
His story also raises a bigger question for Nigerian tennis: what happens if this pathway is replicated?
What if the next Ogunsakin does not have to be an exception?
What if Nigeria could create an environment in which reaching the Grand Slam stage becomes an expected part of the journey for its best young players, rather than a historic rarity?
Those are questions that extend beyond one player.
For now, Oluwaseun “The Shark” has another milestone in front of him.
He turns his attention to the US Open main draw and the next target: a maiden Grand Slam main-draw victory.
From the distinguished grass of Wimbledon to the bright lights of New York, the Shark continues to make his mark.
