The Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

Mr Taofiq noted that preliminary findings showed that the driver was allegedly driving recklessly and may have been under the influence of alcohol.

He said the bus was being driven erratically, prompting motorists behind it to take precautions to avoid a collision.

According to him, a male passenger apparently trying to escape from the moving bus jumped out and sustained severe injuries after hitting the ground.

“The passenger subsequently succumbed to the injuries sustained in the incident,” Mr Taofiq said.

LASTMA officials responding to the incident secured the scene and managed traffic, while removing the damaged bus from the road.

Mr Taofiq explained that personnel from the Area C Police Division, Ojuelegba, provided security at the scene, while officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency evacuated the remains.

69 killed in Lagos road crashes in Q1

The incident comes against the backdrop of a high number of road crashes recorded in Lagos this year.

LASTMA reported that 69 people were killed and 246 others injured in road crashes across the state between January and March 2026. Its officials attended more than 600 accident scenes during the period.

Mr Taofiq urged motorists to avoid reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, also advised motorists to regularly check their brakes, tyres and steering systems before using their vehicles.
