Dara a Port Harcourt love story

MOVIE REVIEW: Dara: A Port Harcourt love story that forgets love

The drama tackles romance, ambition, cultism, and belonging, but struggles to give each theme sufficient depth.

Dara: A Port Harcourt Love Story? wants to be a campus romance, crime drama, social commentary and coming-of-age story at once, but its crowded narrative leaves its central love story struggling for emotional space.

Directed by Bobby Rak and written by Miracle Abia, the 2025 drama follows Dara (Emmanuel Bless Smile Edi), a young dancer and social media personality whose university experience takes a dangerous turn when romance, peer pressure, and cultism collide.

While its strong Port Harcourt identity and committed performances give the film character, its crowded narrative often comes at the expense of emotional depth and a convincing romance.

Plot

Idara, popularly known as Dara (Emmanuel Bless Smile Edi), arrives at a Port Harcourt university with dreams of building a future through dance and social media.

The movie opens when he arrives in the unique city of Port Harcourt to live with his friend Chris, only to be met with intimidation and bullying.

His plans soon collide with the realities of campus life. Peer pressure, rivalries and cultism draw him into a dangerous environment, while his relationship with Sophie (Tomi Ojo) becomes increasingly complicated.

For Dara, dance remains a possible escape. A competition offers the prospect of recognition and a life beyond the violence surrounding him. But a confrontation with dangerous figures threatens his freedom, relationships and ambitions.

Among those figures is Agama (Raymond Umenze), an imposing cult leader whose relationship with his mother (Tina Mba) reveals a more vulnerable side beneath his violent exterior.

As Dara struggles to protect himself and pursue his dreams, the film explores the competing forces of romance, friendship, family, ambition and belonging.

Review

The film’s most convincing achievement is its sense of place. Port Harcourt is not merely a backdrop. Its slang, street culture, music, and youthful energy are incorporated into the narrative, giving Dara an identity that sets it apart from the generic campus dramas that dominate parts of Nollywood.

The film’s Port Harcourt identity also feels connected to its characters rather than merely serving as scenery. Dara’s environment influences how he speaks, moves, and relates to others, while the city’s youth culture provides the social context for his ambitions and conflicts.

The film becomes more compelling when it moves beyond romance and examines why young people seek belonging.

Dara finds purpose in dance and online recognition. Others find it through friendship, relationships or cult brotherhood. The contrast between these forms of belonging gives the story its most interesting underlying idea.

Cultism is therefore more than a source of action. It is presented as a social environment built around loyalty, pressure and identity, although the screenplay does not explore these dimensions as deeply as it could.

The same is true of social-media fame. Dara’s online visibility presents an opportunity to examine the gap between digital popularity and real-world vulnerability, but this thread remains underdeveloped.

The screenplay consequently feels crowded, with romance, cultism, domestic violence, dance, family and social media competing for attention.

The ideas are worthwhile; there are too many of them for all to receive equal dramatic weight.

The romance never quite catches fire. This is the film’s most noticeable narrative weakness.

Dara and Sophie are central to the title, but their relationship does not receive enough development to become the film’s emotional centre. Their connection is understandable, yet the screenplay often treats the romance as something that must move the plot forward rather than a relationship that deserves to unfold naturally.

Ironically, the film’s strongest exploration of love comes through its family relationships.

The bond between Agama and his mother is considerably more affecting, particularly because it exposes the vulnerability beneath his violent persona.

Raymond Umenze gives the film’s standout performance as Agama. He combines menace with vulnerability, avoiding the temptation to turn the character into a one-dimensional villain.

Tina Mba, in a more limited role, brings restraint and emotional weight to the portrayal of Agama’s mother, a woman enduring domestic abuse while maintaining her maternal connection to her son.

Beyond good acts, the film’s technical weaknesses are harder to overlook in its action sequences.

Some confrontations lack the choreography and production polish necessary to sustain the danger the screenplay wants the audience to feel. A shootout in which the surrounding walls remain visibly untouched despite heavy gunfire is one particularly distracting example.

Despite these shortcomings, Dara maintains a youthful energy through its music, dance and performances.

Dara: A Port Harcourt Love Story? is not the polished campus romance its title initially suggests.

Its romance is underdeveloped, its narrative carries too many themes, and some of its action sequences expose clear production limitations. Yet dismissing the film on those shortcomings alone would overlook what makes it distinctive.

Its greatest strength is its sense of place and its willingness to examine the different ways young people seek love, identity and belonging.

It is less successful when it tries to make Dara and Sophie’s romance carry the emotional burden of the entire story.

Verdict: 5/10
