The lone opposition lawmaker in the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Muhammad Kabir, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mr Kabir represents the Birnin Kudu Local Government Area—the home of former governor and PDP leader in the state, Sule Lamido. He announced his defection on Wednesday at an elaborate event at the Government House, Dutse, attended by the Speaker of the Assembly, Haruna Aliyu.

With this development, all 30 members of the Jigawa State House of Assembly are now in the APC. Mr Kabir’s defection followed a similar move by Yahaya Zakari, who previously represented the Fagam constituency on the PDP platform.
Speaking to journalists after the ceremony, Mr Kabir stated that he joined the APC because he was impressed by the programmes and achievements of Governor Umar Namadi over the last three years.

The lawmaker added that his decision came after extensive consultations with key stakeholders in his constituency, including family, friends, and political associates.
“Today, after three years in the PDP, I decided to join the APC under the leadership of Governor Umar Namadi. My decision is based on the quality of leadership I have observed in Governor Namadi. As a lawmaker in the Jigawa House of Assembly, I have seen numerous bills passed to drive infrastructure and state development,” Mr Kabir said.
“This is why I consulted my family, friends, and political allies about my intention to leave the PDP for the APC. That is why you see me here at the Government House today, accompanied by about 1,000 supporters,” he added.
Governor Namadi welcomed the lawmaker and assured him that he would enjoy the same respect, dignity, and treatment as every member of the APC.
“Fairness, mutual respect, and inclusiveness have always been at the heart of our party. Anyone who joins us with a genuine desire to serve will always find a place here.

“I have always believed that politics should bring people together around one common goal — the progress and development of our State. Our administration will continue to work with every well-meaning person who is ready to improve the lives of our people, regardless of their previous political affiliation.
“Hon. Kabiru Ibrahim’s decision to join the APC is another chance for us to strengthen our collective commitment to serving the people of Jigawa State with greater dedication.
“I congratulate him on this step and look forward to working closely with him to promote peace, unity and lasting development for the good people of Birnin Kudu Constituency and Jigawa State as a whole”, he stated in a statement later posted on his Facebook page.
