The police have arrested 22 suspects allegedly involved in a fatal mob attack on a passenger bus in Mangun village, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack, which occurred around 9:47 p.m. on Friday, involved a bus transporting passengers from Zaria, Kaduna State, to Quan’pan LGA of Plateau for a wedding ceremony.

According to a statement issued late Saturday by the Plateau Police Public Relations Officer, Alabo Alfred, the victims reportedly lost their way before their vehicle was intercepted by the mob.
The mob set the vehicle ablaze, leading to casualties. While eight passengers reportedly lost their lives, others sustained injuries.

Swift response
Mr Alfred said that upon receiving credible intelligence, the Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, directed the divisional police officer of Mangu to intervene.
A police team, working in collaboration with other security agencies, dispersed the mob and rescued 21 other passengers.
Of these, 14 escaped unharmed, while seven sustained varying degrees of injuries and were taken to a hospital.

On Saturday morning, Mr Adesina, accompanied by other security officials and his management team, visited Mangun village to assess the situation and implement measures to prevent further violence.
“22 suspects connected to the attack have been apprehended, and we are committed to ensuring justice is served,” the police said.
Investigation underway
He said the Plateau State Intelligence Department was deployed to Mangu for intelligence gathering.
Additionally, the State Criminal Investigation Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The police have called for calm, urging residents to assist with information that could aid in the investigation and prevent further unrest.

This violent incident highlights ongoing security challenges in Plateau State, necessitating robust cooperation between law enforcement and communities to maintain peace and stability.
Earlier, PREMIUM TIMES reported that the Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, condemned the attack, describing it as senseless and inhumane.
In a statement issued by his media aide, the governor sent his condolences to the families of the victims and directed security agencies to ensure those responsible are brought to justice while intensifying efforts to prevent a recurrence.
