I have never been convinced that the IMN presented such a security threat to the Chief of Army Staff’s motorcade enough to warrant the massacre that the army visited on the membership of IMN. It might have been a setup to eliminate the leadership and the vast majority of IMN followership. My grave concern is that it may be too late to prevent this odious situation from deteriorating into an insurgency given the bitterness that has been sowed by the unnecessary elimination of six of the seven children of the IMN’s leader, Zakzakky. So, the nation’s leadership is in a no-win situation regarding releasing Zakzakky as in the proverbial saying: “damn if you do, damn if you don’t”. Overall, our security services remain primitive with regards to handling
civil demonstrations and managing human rights fifty years after Independence. It is up to our policy elite with the support of academia and government funding to come up with and embark on training programs to teach the officer cadre of all our security services including the military the essentials of Human Rights Laws and hope that it will trickle down to the rank and file. That’s my solemn hope for the country.
