Djokovic is the master of all

Novak Djokovic has battled back from a loss of form and various injuries to claim the Wimbledon title and then beat Roger Federer for a first-ever Masters 1000 title at the Cincinnati Masters. With that win, the Serb completed the full set of the nine Masters 1000 events – five years after winning the eighth in Monte Carlo. His first was in Miami in 2007, followed by Canada in the same year. In 2008, he won the events in Indian Wells and Rome. The year 2009 yielded only one – the Paris Masters.

Samuel Eto’o signed for a 13th professional team

Evergreen Cameroon forward, Samuel Eto’o Fils was sported signing for Qatar Sports Club. The 37-year-old signed his 13t professional contract since his first with Real Madrid in 1996. From Cameroon to Spain to Italy to Russia to England to Turkey and now to Qatar, Eto’o has cost about $140 million in transfer fees and he has scored 412 goals in 848 appearances for clubs and country.

Zenit produced one of the greatest European comebacks in 33 years

It was an incredible comeback, made more astounding because 10 men achieved it. Zenit St Petersburg were sported pulling off a football comeback for the history books. After a 4-0 loss away to Dinamo Minsk in the first leg in of their third round Europa League qualifying round in Belarus, the Russians leveled matters in 90 minutes and after Minsk scored first again in extra time, the Russian team went ahead to score another four to qualify 8-5 on aggregate.

Davis cup gets Kosmos-backed revamp

The Davis Cup finally got the go-ahead for a revamp and the person leading the reformation is Barcelona and Spain defender, Gerard Pique. The national tennis championship will morph into a season-ending 18-team event will be played as a year ending week-long, round-robin tournament in November. Pique’s Kosmos sported the overhaul of the 118-year-old competition, which will cost about £2.3 billion.

Media get their own Marathon

There is going to be a first-ever Lagos Media Marathon – specifically a 10km Road Race. This was revealed at a press conference. After covering marathon events, journalists and media personnel have the chance to be reported as they run their own race though the marathon is open to any member of the public who is interested.

Alonso announced retirement

Fernando Alonso will stop racing after the 2018 season. The two-time F1 world champion revealed this on Twitter. The McLaren F1 driver said, “After 17 wonderful years in this amazing sport, it’s time for me to make a change and move on. I have enjoyed every single minute of those incredible seasons and I cannot thank enough the people who have contributed to making them all so special. There are still several grands Prix to go this season, and I will take part in them with more commitment and passion than ever.”

Finally, some very good news as Nouri wakes from a coma

Ajax starlet Abdelhak Nouri is reported to have woken from a coma and can now ‘communicate through gestures’ after suffering brain damage following his collapse on the pitch in a friendly match between Ajax and Werder Bremen in July 2017. He collapsed and had been unconscious since that time but his brother, Abderrahim Nouri told The Sun: “His neurological condition is better than a few months ago. Physically, it’s hard. He does not move the body, just the head, but sometimes he gets out of bed to sit in his wheelchair. You can communicate with him.” Abdelhak Nouri had suffered supposed permanent brain damage after a heart attack due to cardiac arrhythmia and was not expected to recover.
