ANALYSIS: The real cost of following football in Nigeria

The BBC this week released a study which they titled #PriceofFootball, which literally asks the football fan, what it takes to follow his passion for the game – be it fans that go to stadiums or those that watch on cable or those that watch online – there is something that is been spent.

In Nigeria, where we have millions of passionate football fans of local and foreign football, clubs like Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Inter Milan have colossal followership in the country and they go all out to support these clubs.

There are also the passionate fans of Kano Pillars, Shooting Stars, Enugu Rangers and others. There are also some fans [like NFF president, Amaju Pinnick] who can afford to travel once in a while to watch their beloved foreign team.

We will thus try to calculate what the average football fan spends on watching football for one season – August to May, and in the case of international competitions, even until September.

The Cable Addict
The money that is going to the players and the clubs comes indirectly [or directly] from the supporters, whether on the terraces or on their couches.

To watch EPL matches in Nigeria at the moment, one needs to have the Premium bouquet which will have the cost of power added as well.
Cable for nine months = N125,820
Generator Fuel @ N2000/month = N18,000
Total = N143,820 = $719

The Viewing Centre Addict
Some guys just need the stadium feel to their football fix so they patronize viewing centres, where they have camaraderie with fellow supporters and that sometimes comes with some drinking of beer or beverages.
N100 [Avg. viewing centre cost] x 8weekend days x 9months = N7,200
Champions League + other matches N100 x 12 = N1,200
Other matches [10] = N1,000
Drinking {N100/Match-day] = N9,400
Total = N18,800 = $94

This is just to showcase what people normally spend on watching football in Nigeria without costing the frequent flyer and other miscellaneous expenses like buying jerseys, etc.

So what price are you paying to watch or follow your favourite team? We like to hear from you.
