It was another record breaking day for Cristiano Ronaldo last Wednesday in Malmo as he went ahead of Raul’s club goal scoring record at Real Madrid. His double took him to 323 goals achieved in just 308 matches while Raul took 423 games to get to 323 goals. His first goal against the Swedish side also took him to his 500th career goal.
Venus Williams wins 700th match and Wuhan title
Venus Williams captured her 47th WTA career title on Saturday, and her biggest in five years, when she won the Wuhan Open in China, beating Wimbledon runner-up Garbine Muguruza. The 35-year-old will rise to 14th in the rankings with her junior sister, Serena still in firm hold of the No. 1 spot.
Venus won her 700th career match with a win over Julia Goerges in the second round of the Wuhan Open before outlasting Johanna Konta in the quarter-finals 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. She then saved a match point in her semi-final victory over Italy’s Roberta Vinci and then Muguruza retired in the finals with Venus leading 6-3 3-0.
England crash out of own Rugby World Cup
England on Saturday became the first country to be knocked out as hosts of the World Cup. The Three Lions were beaten by Australia 33-13 to cap a disappointing campaign for the hosts even though coach of the team, Stuart Lancaster has said he would not be resigning. There are stories that there was unease in the squad over the influence of backs coach Andy Farrell on selection and tactics and opposition to the management’s determination to pick Sam Burgess.
Zlatan beats Pauleta’s PSG record
Swedish striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, on Sunday scored twice, from penalties for PSG to beat Marseille 2-1 and takes his goal tally for the French champions to 110, one ahead of Pauleta’s record of 109 goals.
EPL loses two coaches in one day
While Dick Advocaat decided to call it quits with Sunderland after seven months on the job, Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group relieved Brendan Rodgers of his Liverpool job with a transatlantic phone call.
Advocaat had wanted to discontinue his role with the Black Cats after saving them from relegation but he was persuaded to stay – he should have listened to his inner voice. For Rodgers, it was just a matter of time, after the former Swansea manager spent almost £300 million on players in three years without winning the EPL title.

Liverpool goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux has apologised to Swindon, where he is on loan from Liverpool for using 5,000 one pence coins to pay a £50 fine i Vigouroux was sent back to Liverpool after the ‘slight’ but we need to ask what was wrong with paying with the coins? The coins are still legal tender in the UK and he made sure that he got his numbers right!
