Shehu Gusau and George Olamide were on Tuesday in Abuja elected as president and vice-president of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) respectively.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the elections, which were held at the national stadium involved four contestants for the two positions.
Gusau was elected as president with 48 votes as against 2 votes for his opponent, Mary Collins.
In the election for the position of vice-president, Olamide got 43 votes to defeat former African sprint champion Mary Onyali, who got 3 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Gusau said he would work to promote the athletics sport from the grassroots.
“We will take Nigerian athletics to the level of competing with the world. We will start the work from the grassroots. That is one of the ways we can promote the game in the country,’’ he said.(NAN)
