Africa Table Tennis Championships: Nigeria’s top player blasts sports ministry

Funke Oshonaike

Nigeria Table Tennis legend, Funke Oshonaike, has berated the Sports Ministry for the embarrassment caused the country at the ongoing Africa Table Tennis Championships in Agadir, Morocco.

Oshonaike in an outburst on social media on Monday revealed how she came all the way from her Germany base to Morocco only to find out that are other teammates were unable to make it down having been supposedly denied the needed funds by the Sports Ministry.

“I’m so very sad and disappointed this morning… After more than 25yrs of representing Nigeria, My great country Nigeria has touched where they are not supposed to touch and it hurts so bad!” Oshonaike, who was the country’s flag bearer at the last Olympic Games in Rio, said.

She continued: “I’m in Agadir Morocco to represent NIGERIA in Africa table tennis championship and the female team has just been worked (walked) over bcos I’m the only one here and the others are not here!

“They couldn’t make it bcos of the ministry of sport. No money! We are the champion in Africa and the people in sports couldn’t care less.

According to Oshonaike, the Nigeria Table Tennis President, Enitan Oshodi, has been doing his best but his efforts have not been complemented nor appreciated by the sports authorities.

“My dear president Barr. Enitan Oshodi has been doing a lot for the development of this sport and even has to pay for some of the guys to be here but he’s not encouraged at all.”

Nigeria may have to pay for her actions as the country may be shut out of the upcoming Team’s Championship in Sweden.

“Got the facts that my other team mates are not here now is going to cause the female team from participating in the next team championship in Sweden” Oshonaike further revealed

“It’s actually shocking to me to see the other African players that are not up to Nigeria standard to be here whereas the so called giant of Africa is not here!

“ I love my dear country so very much and I’m sacrificing all that I have for her but Naija don’t want to do its own part,” she added.

“Somebody please tell me if the ministry of sports is still working in Nigeria or is no more! I really do miss sports in Naija the way it’s used to be” the 40-year-old concluded.

Nigeria’s sports ministry is yet to give any reason for the country’s non-appearance. Nneka Anibeze, the spokesperson to the sports minister, did not return calls and text messages sent to her.

The African championships which began on Monday will run through October 30. It will serve as qualification for the World Team Cup and the ITTF World Table Tennis Championship both in 2017.
