The Mayor of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, Horacio Rodriguez Larreta on Tuesday, unveiled a Lionel Messi Statue as part of its ”Don’t Leave” campaign to tempt Messi to reconsider his decision to quit the Argentine national team.
Messi announced his retirement from international football following Argentina’s heartbreaking Copa America final defeat to Chile.
Argentine President Mauricio Macri said he had spoken by telephone with Messi and he was hoping he would change his mind.
President Macri said he hoped to meet Messi next week to try and convince him to return to the national team.
Messi, who celebrated his 29th birthday five days ago, returned to Argentina on Monday after the COPA America exit, but has not spoken publicly about his decision.
