The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN has announced that the final leg of the Golden League will be holding in Akure on Monday inside the Sports Complex of the Federal University of Technology, FUTA.
Olukayode Thomas, Head of the Media, in a press statement explained that the Federation was opting to have the Akure Meet on Monday in order to beat the deadline to submit final entries for the African Senior Athletics Championship billed for Durban, South Africa later this month.
“The next leg of our Golden League will take place in Akure on Monday, the athletes are already in shape after participating in the first three legs in Abuja, Sapele and Sagamu just last Tuesday,” Mr. Thomas said.
He added that the list of athletes to the Durban championships will be based strictly on merit as the country is keen to get the best representation in South Africa.
Nigeria finished as runners-up behind South Africa at the last African Senior Athletics Championship in Morocco and would be hoping to put up a more formidable challenge this term.
Omolara Omotosho, who made a stunning comeback from injury during the Sagamu Meet, as well as Egwero Ogho-Oghene who has been dominating the 100m races in the past Golden League races, are top on the list of athletes expected to add sparkle to the Akure Meet on Monday.
Meanwhile, some of the events expected to be competed for in Monday’s Golden League Meet in Akure include the men and women’s 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m, 1500m, 100m/110m hurdles and 400m hurdles.
The field events include the men and women’s Triple Jump, Long Jump, Javelin throw, shot put and a host of others.
