The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has invited 16 athletes to the Port Harcourt training camp in preparation for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Top on the list of invited athletes is reigning Commonwealth and African Long Jump champion, Ese Brume.

According to a statement from Olukayode Thomas, the spokesperson for the AFN, the 16 athletes were invited based on their performance at last Tuesday’s Over-Distance competition organized by AFN at the University of Port Harcourt High Performance Centre in Rivers State.

It is expected that the invitation for Brume will definitely serve as a morale booster for the former National champion who had an unimpressive 2015.

It will be great to see Brume bounce back in time to retain her continental title and also qualify for the Olympics.

Men’s National 200m champion, Odele Tega, was also included in the list, and will be hoping to consolidate on his achievements from last season, including competing at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing, and then winning Bronze at the African Games a month later.

Other athletes expected to resume at the Port Harcourt camp are Knowledge Omovoh, Okolosi Oghenekome, Akerele Atanda, Avnaherhe Oke, Simeon Friday and Afam Ogbuagu.

They will be joined by Ogbonna Prosper, Afeez Abduraman, Odigbo Rita, Nwichi Ngozi, Isah Salihu, Ugochukwu Ottah, Ehigie Josephine and Igbinosun Isoken. Kayode Yaya is the only coach invited by the federation.
