The crisis at the IAAF continued on Monday as the body, in reaction to the findings of WADA’s Independent Commission, is now considering sanctions against the Russia Athletic Federation.
Reports last week that former IAAF president, Lamine Diack, collected about 1million Euros to cover up positive drug tests seem now to be just a tip of the malaise that has been building up for years.
The new IAAF President, Sebastian Coe, said the sanctions being proposed may include the provisional and full suspension plus their removal from future IAAF events.
“The information in WADA’s Independent Commissions Report is alarming,” Coe said on the official IAAF website.
“We need time to properly digest and understand the detailed findings included in the report.
“However, I have urged the Council to start the process of considering sanctions against ARAF. This step has not been taken lightly.
“Our athletes, partners and fans have my total assurance that where there are failures in our governance or our anti-doping programmes we will fix them.
“We will do whatever it takes to protect the clean athletes and rebuild trust in our sport. The IAAF will continue to offer the police authorities our full co-operation into their ongoing investigation,” he added.
The 3 steps for IAAF sanctioning
1. IAAF Council to decide whether to proceed with a potential sanctions’ process against a Member Federation.
2. The Member Federation is asked to respond to the allegations and proposed sanctions.
3. IAAF Council to consider the Member Federation response as soon as possible and make a decision on next steps.
