Samuel Ojebode, a Shooting Stars legend and former Green Eagles defender, is dead.
Ojebode, 68, starred for Shooting Stars FC of Ibadan for several years and also captained the Ibadan team. Asides playing for Nigeria at the 1976 African Cup of Nations in Ethiopia, he was deputy skipper of the squad in Ethiopia but led the team on some occasions whenever substantive skipper Christian Chukwu was not on the field.
A former board chairman of Shooting Stars, Ojebode gave up the ghost Wednesday morning as a result of ‘Lung Cancer’ at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan.
According to an account by Dapo Adeshina, the commissioner for sports in Oyo state, Ojebode, who seemed to be winning battle against the terminal disease, was rushed back to the hospital on Monday where he was placed on life support machine.
The commissioner said the news of the demise is a sad one while also promising that the State Government would do everything possible to support the family of the late footballer.
“We are deeply touched that Chief Ojebode is gone, we actually tried all we could as the state has been footing his hospital bills since he first became ill last year. I can assure you that the Oyo state government will be there to support the family any way we can,” he said.
Ojedode is the third Shootings Stars legend after Rashidi Yekini and Joe Apiah to kiss the world bye in recent months.
