The group phase of the UEFA Champions League got off to a thrilling start on Tuesday with a handful of shocking results including a home loss suffered by Chelsea against Valencia.
Frank Lampard’s men were the talk of town last weekend in the Premier League but on the bigger stage in Europe they were beaten 1-0 by Valencia at Stamford Bridge.
Ross Barkley missed an opportunity to equalise for Chelsea after Rodrigo scored for the visitors. Barkley missed a penalty which hit the crossbar.
Elsewhere, Liverpool’s opening match of the defence of their Champions League crown ended in defeat.
The Reds suffered late 2-0 loss to Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo.

History was also made in Germany as the 16-year-old Ansu Fati became the youngest player to feature in a Champions League game for Barcelona. But his side needed a penalty save from Marc‑André Ter Stegen to rescue a 0-0 draw against Borussia Dortmund.
Earlier in Group F, Nicolò Barella scored a stoppage‑time equaliser for Internazionale to rescue a 1-1 draw at home to Slavia Prague. Nigeria’s Peter Olayinka scored Slavia Prague’s goal.
In Group G, Lyon were held to a 1-1 home draw by Zenit St Petersburg. Memphis Depay’s penalty cancelled out Sardar Azmoun’s first-half opener for the Russian champions, while RB Leipzig defeated Benfica 2-1 in Lisbon.
Last season’s semi-finalists, Ajax, also made a winning start against Victor Osimhen’s Lille in Amsterdam, winning 3-0 to go top of Group H.
