Atletico Madrid have emerged as the winners of the 2018 UEFA Super Cup after they beat their fierce city rivals, Real Madrid, 4-2, in a thrilling encounter on Wednesday night at the A Le Coq Arena in Estonia.
The UEFA Super Cup pitches the winners of the Champions League against the Europa League kings; and it was a good representation by the two Madrid teams.
This was the fourth all-Spanish Super Cup in five years and the first to be held in the Estonian capital of Tallinn.
Atletico hit the ground running from the blast of the whistle as Diego Costa gave them the lead inside 50 seconds.
Costa’s goal is the fastest ever in the history of UEFA Super Cup.
Despite falling behind that early, Real Madrid played their way back into the game and they equalised in the 27th minute through Karim Benzema.
The two sides were at par till the end of the first forty-five minutes.
In the second half, both teams had chances, but it was Real Madrid that raced into the front in the 63rd minute as captain Sergio Ramos scored from the penalty spot.
Atletico swiftly pressed on for an equaliser afterward and their efforts paid off in the 79th minute with Costa scoring again for Diego Simeone’s men.
Just as the teams were at par at the end of the first half, it was the same in the second half at 2-2; hence the game dragged into extra time.
In extra time, it was an Atletico show as they scored two goals through Saul Niguez and Koke.
This time around, there was no coming back for Real Madrid as the tie ended 4-2 in favour of Atletico.
This is the third UFA Super Cup title for Atletico Madrid who won the 2010 and 2012 editions.
