Iran’s national football team have sealed their place at the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia.
The western Asian country joined Brazil as the second team to secure a World Cup ticket after defeating Uzbekistan 2-0, with goals from Sardar Azmoun and Mehdi on Monday at the country’s capital, Tehran.
Iran topped their group with 20 points with six points gap ahead of second place, Oman, and an eight-point advantage over their opponents, Uzbekistan, who are third on the table.
Five-time winners Brazil were the first team to qualify for the next year’s tournament.
The top two teams in each of Asia’s two qualifying groups progress to the World Cup, while the teams in third place will settle for play-offs.
