The dreams of lifting the Champions League trophy again this season is over for Nigeria’s John Obi Mikel after his club, Chelsea, were dumped out of the competition late Wednesday night by French champions, Paris Saint Germain.
PSG completed a double over Chelsea as they beat the Blues 1-2 in London same way they did in Paris in the First leg.
In a game they needed to win to stand a better chance of making the Champions League next season, Chelsea however fluffed their lines as they were beaten at Stamford Bridge 2-1 by PSG on Wednesday night.
The English champions knew exactly what they needed to do on the night and despite scoring shortly after conceding the opener, they still went ahead to lose and with them sitting 10th on the Premier League table, it does look like they won’t be playing in Europe next season.
PSG shot into the lead in Wednesday’s game after 16 minutes and Rabiot was the scorer, sliding in front of Azpilicueta to meet an inviting low Ibrahimovic cross at the far post.
With that, Chelsea needed to score three goals to progress but all they could muster was the face-saving equaliser gotten by Diego Costa in the 27th minute.
Mikel, who was yellow-carded during his team’s home defeat on Wednesday, will now shift focus to the FA Cup where they still have a fighting chance of claiming tops and also attempt for the best possible finish on the final EPL standings at the end of the season.
With this development, Kelechi Iheanacho of Manchester City is the only Nigerian left in the UEFA Champions League.
