Four matches to watch to watch this weekend

Super Eagles of Nigeria

Louis van Gaal has the chance of becoming a fan favourite if he can lead Manchester United to a victory on Sunday over Liverpool at Anfield and in Kigali.

Sunday Oliseh will be seeking to become the first coach to win the CHAN title for Nigeria.

Nigeria vs. Niger @Stade Régional de Nyamirambo @17:00 on Jan.18
Nigeria’s home-based Eagles start their second CHAN tournament almost fifth-favourites for the title. They came close in the last edition in South Africa, but Ghana stopped them in the semis but they got a credible bronze. The Eagles have been incredibly stingy at the back and have not conceded a goal in 509 minutes of football.

Liverpool vs. Manchester United @Anfield @15:05 on Jan.17
For all the distress at Anfield, Liverpool are just three points behind their eternal rivals, Manchester United but both are lost in the mire for the chase for the fourth Champions League slot and that makes for a cracking atmosphere on Sunday. They also drew their last matches 3-3, which was for Jurgen Klopp and his side a moral victory against league leaders, Arsenal; but United saw their own draw away at Newcastle as two points dropped. Who wants this more? The answer will decide the winner of Sunday’s encounter.

Milan vs. Fiorentina @San Siro @20:45 on Jan.17
Milan manager, Sinisa Mihajlović, is on the edge, and a defeat at home to Fiorentina, on Sunday, could push him over. With the 18-time Serie A winners languishing in eighth, they need to start pushing to make sure that they do not miss out on another champions League campaign. But at the moment that ambition looks far away although Fiorentina lost their last match at home.

History does not bode well for AC Milan as they have won just one of their last nine league games against Sunday’s opponent.

Barcelona vs. Athletic Bilbao @Camp Nou @20:30 on Jan.17
Second in La Liga, with a game in hand, Barcelona will go all out against their Basque opponents, who are in eighth position, and are pushing for a Europa League slot. Barcelona will be without the suspended Luis Suarez but should still have enough through World Player of the year, Lionel Messi and Neymar. Bilbao can be tough to break down. Last season, Bustinza, was riled by Neymar’s rainbow flick at the Nou Camp, so watch out for another episode of that encounter.
