Africa U-23 Championship: Nigeria beat Algeria to emerge champions

Nigeria's U-23 national team defeats Algeria 2-1 to emerge African Champions

The Nigeria U-23 team has emerged champions of the second edition of the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations following their 2-1 win over their Algerian counterparts on Saturday at the Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium, Dakar.

Two goals from Oghenekaro Etebo in the first half was enough to hand Nigeria the title even though the Algerians got some sort of lifeline when Segun Oduduwa scored an own goal.

The Algerians moved closer to getting an equaliser but they were denied by the heroics of goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel who not only stopped a penalty kick but made other fantastic saves.

Nigeria will now head to the Olympics as African Champions and will be joined by the duo of Algeria and South Africa.

  • Man_Enough

The team i watched was highly confident and motivated. This is the time to start perfecting their acts for the olympics, whil one hopes the victory will not get into their heads.

    • Mephistoheles

It’s funny that all goals in the game were scored by Nigerians!

      • Rommel

Yes because in Nigeria,we have das Gute, das Schlechte und das Hässliche

  • Sodge

Point of correction. Not Nigeria beats Algeria. It should be Biafra beats Algeria.
    TEAM COMPOSITION
    East (Biafran Republic) = 64%
South (Niger Delta Republic) = 33%
    West (Oluwole Republic) = 2%
    North (Bokostani Republic) = 1%

    • Timi

Honestly I do not see how the North contributes to Nigeria and Nigeria’s image except by being prolific suicide bombers. What a country? Why no federal character in team selection? Why do we use merit and players’ skill set as a basis for selecting sporting team members and then the reverse in selecting our politicians and public office holders? Even people with dull brains who could not pass basic school exams are exalted. This is truly democratic in that everybody has a chance but it is horrible that we are like this. Lets break up so that those of us who cherish excellence can write our constitution to suit our values and not a constitution that says any dunce can be president even with a primary school certificate. This is what some Nigerian lawyers interpreted in May this yr. Shame. Shame on all of us.Shame…that the office of the President becomes the office that requires practically no qualification…Why? Because a particular section of the country MUST be carried along. Shame!

      • Mephistoheles

What do you think the Hausa use all those cows they roam around the country with for? cheat sheet on an examination????
Perhaps all the beef. potatoes, peppers, onions and other agricultural products you consume came out of your mothers vagina.

What you are exhibiting is not information seeking behavior. If it were, we would help you. You simply want to “diss” northerners but lack the courage! Consider this your free pass to ‘diss’ all you want! Get everything off your chest because when push comes to shove, not only your chest, but your whole being will doubtlessly realize what Hausa’s and Yorubas contribute to the nation…….and for better or for worse, we will show you your place!

    • Dele Awogbeoba

      The team was:

      Daniel Emmanuel
      Sincere seth
      Ndifreke Effiong
      Azubuike Okechukwu
      Amaefule Chizoba
      Oduduwa Segun
      Muhammad Usman
      Victor Osimhen
      Tiongoli Tonbara
      Oghenekaro Etebo
      Junior Ajayi

2 igbos out of 11 is just under 20%.

2 Yorubas out of 11 is just under 20%

1 Northerner is just under 10%

6 out of 11 South southerners is just under 55%

Your mathematics seems a bit of!

  • DAWUD

Thank God for everything. Less than one year of Buhari government 2 major trophies in the bag.

    • Dt

…..We thank god for the fuel scarcity too.
….We thank god for the 2,213 people who have died in less than 6 months through terrorism under Buhari’s government.
….We thank god for the 23 Peaceful Biafran protesters killed in less than just 6 months of Buhari’s goberment
….We thank god too for the worthless Naira an the record high inflation rate in less than just 6 months

—We thank god for the loss of hundreds of thousands of jobs in less than just 6 months
      ……….
      Keep deceiving urself.

      • Mephistoheles

Youare a shining example of the cancer that needs to be excised from the motherland. In case you don’t understand what we are saying, think of the current medical protocol with regards to cancerous cells and how they are handled. They are either excised or irradiated to death!

You talk of fuel scarcity in Nigeria forgetting that the previous administration created it by corruptive ways.

You talk of 2213 people that have died due to terrorist activities of Boko Haram under President Buhari, forgetting the ones under the previous administration; forgetting that because of human rights abuses Nigeria was barred from acquiring weapons of war. Forgetting how much Dasuki, Jonathan and NOI stole for the procurement of weapons.

You talk of the worthless naira……..a very id10tic thing to do when your folks created the problem.

Your problem is that you are a borderline illiterate! You may be able to read and/or write but you have no clue with regards to the things you are reading or writing, If this was not the case, you would have realized that every single complain you have can not be created in 6 months.

You would have realized that while you are there pinching your nose at Buhari…..the stench is actually coming form you and your ilk.

Do yourself a favor and shut the hell up! ………atleast until such a time we are comfortable enough to invite you to the ‘grown up’ table.

P.S. In case you missed it, we are calling you a moron!

    • Mephistoheles

You sir are part of the problem.
How can you attribute Soccer winnings to Buhari? Please shut up if you have nothing reasonable to say!
Nigerians are tired of ignoramuses like you!

    • Harry

      Rubbish

  • PolyGon2013

    Sai, Siasia

  • sammyctu ode

CONGRATULATIONS! However the team needs more cohesion, brilliant strategy by the coach, more team plays and better passing accuracy to do well on the world stage. Our defense is still very porous and the defensive coach should do a better job as from now. The goal that Oduduwa scored is not acceptable to Nigerians and coach Siasia should not be a dundee and a gentleman at the side line.

  • Rommel

Well Siasia has finally received his very first gold trophy as a coach, congrats to him and the boys
