The Ondo State team defeated Bayelsa Queens 4-2 in penalty kicks in the final match played on Sunday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
After a barren first half, it was Bayelsa Queens who scored the first goal through Patience Kalu but the Akure team gave themselves a lifeline when Shola Oyewusi fired in the equaliser late in the game to end 90 minutes of action at 1-1.
As already stated by the organisers, the teams went straight into penalty kicks and it was Sunshine Queens that emerged victorious afterwards.
Bayelsa Queens who had the better chances during the game were simply porous during the penalty shoot outs; scoring just one kick while their opponents netted three from the penalty spot to make it 4-2 overall.
Sunday’s victory will be a huge relief for Sunshine Queens who were beaten finalists last year. For their efforts, the Akure-based club will get N1 million while runners-up Bayelsa Queens will get N0.5m.
