The newly crowned champions of the world, the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria, have yet again been applauded for the tenacity they displayed in defending their FIFA U17 World Cup title in Chile.
The latest accolades for the Eaglets came from the governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo.
Speaking through the immediate past chairman of Gombe State Sports Commission and President/CEO of FC Yarmalight, Farouk Yarma, the governor said the Eaglets made him proud as a Nigerian with the manner they conquered the World in Chile for a record fifth time.
“After watching the final, I was proud to be a Nigerian, as the Golden Eaglets displayed true Nigeria spirit of hard work, enthusiasm, resourcefulness and commitment to fatherland,” the governor was quoted as saying.
Mr. Yarma told PREMIUM TIMES that the Governor was very impressed with the Eaglets and their handlers.
“We are known over the world as passionate soccer lovers, so the team unified Nigerians in every game they won from the group stage to finals.
“Like I did say, the Eaglets’ commitment to fatherland was so great that after losing their third game to Croatia 2-1, their morale changed, as they started winning be wide goal margins.
“This is a good statement to us as Nigerians. It teaches us never to give up in any condition one find itself.
“I however urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to galvanize the new Eaglets with the other national youth teams to form a formidable Super Eagles.
“An Eagles that will be super, not make up the numbers in the World Cup but go on to become the first African team to win the Mundial, like the Eaglets did in Chile and Dream Team in Atlanta 1996, where we won the Olympic gold in the men’s football event.
“As Nigerians, we have faith in the players and Coach Sunday Oliseh, so we expect the team wins the match,” Mr Yarma quoted the governor as saying.
