Enyimba of Aba on Sunday secured a controversial away 0-1 victory over their host, Abia Warriors.
Coach Ladan Bosso of Abia Warriors said after the match that there was no compromise in his team’s Abia derby with Enyimba.
Both sides met at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Sunday in a Match Day 36 fixture in the 2014/2015 Nigeria Professional Football League.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that a cross-section of spectators who watched the clash had expressed disappointment at the quality of the game.
They had claimed there was a lacklustre performance by both teams and alleged that there was a compromise and “boardroom settlement.”
But speaking in a post-match interview, Bosso said he had never been involved in match-fixing in his decades of coaching experience.
He said his players did their best, but regretted that they could not get a goal.
The Chairman of Enyimba FC, Felix Anyansi-Agwu, also dismissed the impression both teams’ performance gave, saying there was no deal to favour either team during the encounter.
He said while spectators might have had high expectations of seeing many goals, the slim scoreline recorded in the match should not be misconstrued to mean a compromise.
“I’ve said times without number that this is a tight game. People were expecting five to six goals and, because we are sister clubs, people expected that one club was going to do the other a favour.
“But there was no such thing. Everybody came out to fight and if we didn’t score, it could have ended in a draw.
“So, in spite of the impression people had, thinking that there was a compromise, I am glad they have seen that both teams meant business,” the Enyimba International FC chairman said.
He said both teams’ pride was at stake, adding that while Abia Warriors wanted to win, Enyimba were more motivated to win and claim the league trophy.
Lobi Stars were also leading their hosts, Sunshine Stars of Akure, 0-1 until the 77th minute when the match was disrupted.
