Nigeria’s female football team, the Super Falcons, will be returning from the All Africa Games empty-handed as they lost 2-1 to Cote d Ivoire in their bronze medal match on Thursday.
The reigning African champions have been a bundle of disappointment at the African Games despite showing some flashes of brilliance in their first two games, beating hosts Congo and then Tanzania.
The Falcons lost their last group game to the Ivorian Ladies who again confirmed their superiority over their Nigerian counterparts with Thursday’s, 2-1 win.
Interestingly, it was the Falcons who scored first in Thursday’s bronze medal match contest through Chiwendu Ihezuo in the 53rd minute but they were unable to hold their lead.
The Ivorian Women responded with two goals in seven minutes to win the tie.
The show in Congo caps a poor year for the Falcons who failed to live to expectations at the female world cup in Canada and also failed to qualify for the Olympic Games for the second time on the bounce.
