The Nigeria men and women football team have both failed in their bid to secure gold medals at the ongoing All Africa Games in Congo.
The Dream Team VI were defeated 3-1 by Burkina Faso while Cameroon got some sort of revenge over the Super Falcons, beating them 2-1 in Tuesday’s semi-final contests.
The defeats for the Nigerian teams were somewhat surprising as the two sides had pledged to settle for nothing less than gold in Congo.
Coach of the Nigeria U23 team, Samson Siasia, made two changes to his starting lineup for Tuesday’s semi clash against Burkina Faso
Siasia brought in Femi Oladapo for the bereaved Daniel Etor, while Christian Pyagbara was preferred to start ahead of Enyimba star, Kinglsey Sokari.
After sealing their spot in the semifinal as group B winners, the Nigeria Dream Team were confident the Young Stallions would not halt their ambition but that was not the case at the end.
Goals from defender Seth Sincere, Omar Kabore and Arba Dicko gave victory to Burkina Faso.
The Dream team VI were hoping to clinch a second All African games football gold, having won it on home soil in 1973.
The closest they came to winning it was at the 2003 All African games in Abuja, but Cameroon put paid to the hopes of the hosts, with a 2-0 win in the final.
In the other men’s semifinal tie, Senegal beat host Congo 3-1.
For the Falcons, after the bright start recorded against Congo and then Tanzania, they failed to sparkle in their final group game, losing to Ivory Coast before now succumbing to Cameroon on Tuesday.
Both the Dream Team VI and the Falcons will now have to save face with the bronze medal matches.
