The Nigeria Football Federation has said it would investigate a supposed fans’ attack on the Head Coach of Sharks FC, Gbenga Ogunbote.
Officials said on Friday evening that Ogunbote, who took Sunshine Stars FC to the semi finals of the CAF Confederation Cup a few years ago, was attacked by armed persons believed to be fans of Sharks FC for allegedly dropping some players who are indigenes of Rivers State from the team.
“This is barbaric. I saw the photographs on television and it was very bad. Why I attack a Coach for any reason? We will get to the root of this matter and those found to be culpable will face severe sanctions,” NFF Vice President, Seyi Akinkunmi said in a press release signed by NFF spokesperson, Ademola Olajiire
For now, Coach Ogunbote is recuperating at an unnamed Port Harcourt hospital and it is not clear if he will be willing to stay on with the team following the attack.
