Sports Minister sacks Segun Odegbami, others

The Minister of Sports announced the dissolution of the board of the Nigeria Academicals Sports Committee (NASCOM).

The Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Bolaji Abdullahi, on Tuesday in Abuja, announced the dissolution of the Board of the Nigeria Academicals Sports Committee (NASCOM).

The minister thanked the former Green Eagles captain, Segun Odegbami, who was the chairman of the board, and other members for their various contributions towards achieving the mandate of NASCOM.

Mr. Abdullahi said the measure is geared towards repositioning the body for greater efficiency in the discovery and nurturing of grassroots talents especially through school sports.

According to Julius Ogunro, the minister’s media aide, Mr. Abdullahi who cut short his stay in London where the Paralympics is ongoing, will announce a new board soon.

Mr. Odegbami over the weekend talked about plans by NASCOM to bring Olympic medalists, Chioma Ajunwa, Falilat Ogunkoya, Mary Onyali, Yusuf Ali and few others together to join in NASCOM’s efforts at combing schools in the country for future athletics stars.

“We have brought these great men and women together because for now we are focusing on sprints and jumps, the 100m, 200m, 400m, the relays, long jump and triple jump,” he said.

He also said that the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) would not be taking active part in the catch-them-young project being proposed.
