Stephen Keshi, Head Coach of the Super Eagles, will on Thursday name Europe-based players who will make the national team list for the Nations Cup qualifying match against Liberia.
The ceremony which would be held in Abuja, would see the players complement the home based side that had been in camp since two weeks ago for the Sept. 8 clash in Monrovia.
According to a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) by the Super Eagles Media Officer, Ben Alaiya, only players who play regularly for their clubs will be invited.
“The official unveiling was to douse speculation over which of the Europe-based players would make the squad against the Lone Stars” Alaiya explained.
He said that Keshi had already forwarded the list of the players to the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Association which also made its input.
Alaiya restated that there was no Sallah break for the team, except for Uche Kalu whose father died last week while the player was on national assignment in Niamey.
“Kalu has been permitted to go to his native Igbere in Abia, to make burial preparations for his father, who died while he was away on national assignment in the friendly against Niger Republic last week in Niamey.
“He is expected to return to camp early enough to be part of the trip to Monrovia for the first leg of the Nations Cup qualifier after family arrangements have been concluded for the burial of his late father,” Alaiya said.
NAN reports that Kalu had been a regular in the national team since Keshi took over from Samson Siasia, posting positive outings in the World Cup and Nations Cup qualifiers with no goals so far but several assists.
Kalu scored in Eagles’ friendly against Egypt in Dubai and posted the two assists with which Sunday Mba scored twice against the Lone Star of Liberia in a friendly played in January in Monrovia.
