London Olympics: Nigerian male sprinters crumble in 100m

No Nigerian male sprinter made it beyond the first round of the 100m Men’s events at the ongoing London 2012 Olympics.

The country’s three representatives, Obinna Metu, Peter Emelize, and Ogho-Oghene Egwero all fell like a pack of cards in their respective heats held on Saturday.

Metu who emerged as the Nigeria’s fastest man for 2012 at the All Nigeria Championships in Calabar could only run a paltry 10.32 seconds time which saw him finish 5th in his race.

The University of Port Harcourt graduate, who had the opportunity of training with the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt, some time ago, had boasted about achieving a sub-nine seconds performance the Olympics; but could not even make a 10seconds flat performance.

Egwero, on his part, could do very little; running just beside Bolt in his heat. The Delta State born athlete finished 6th in the race; won by the Jamaican, who literally strolled through to the finishing line.

The country’s ‘best’ performance was from Peter Emelize who ran a faster 10.22 seconds compared to his compatriots, but still failed to make the cut for the semi finals.

Emelize’s 10.22 seconds, which interestingly is his season best time, saw him finish in 5th place in his heat.

The trio will hope to do better when they regroup for the relays as well as the 200m events.

While the Athletics Federation of Nigeria never believed the male sprinters could win individual medals, the federation had hoped that they would make it to the semi finals.

Attention will now be on the women later tonight as the duo of Blessing Okagbare and Gloria Asunmu will be competing in the semi finals and hopefully make the final-cut, which will also be held tonight.

Aside the duo, three other Nigerian athletes are in the semi finals of the 400m women’s event and the 400m men’s hurdles event. They are Omolara Omotosho, Regina George  for the women and Amaechi Morton for the men’s event.
