Tragedy in Ibadan as another Shooting Stars hero dies

While many Nigerians, especially Shooting Stars fans, are yet to come to terms with the sudden death of Rashidi Yekini, one of the greatest players that has don the jersey of 3SC, another former great player of the Oluyole Warriors , Joe Appiah has passed on.

Appiah 66, Premium Times gathered, died early Saturday morning in the Oke-Ado area of Ibadan, Oyo State, after a protracted battle with illness.

Appiah had been sick for close to two months and his health condition at a time degenerated because of lack of adequate medical attention and funds.

Temporary reprieve however came the way of the Ghanaian defender, who won the Africa Cup Winners Cup with 3SC in 1976 and has since made Nigeria his home, when the Oyo State Commissioner for Sports, Dapo Lam Adesina ordered the 3SC management to foot his health bills.

The management promptly donated N.5m for his treatment last month but that could not avert his death.

Media Officer for Shooting Stars, Jubril Arowolo, who is away in Port Harcourt for his side’s Sunday Clash with Dolphins FC, said the management of Shooting Stars would meet with the family of the deceased to hammer out the funeral arrangements for the late footballer.

Appiah’s Africa Cup Winners Cup triumph with Shooting Stars in 1976 was the fisrt international trophy for any Nigerian clubside.
