Arsenal confirm Nigeria visit, to play in Abuja August 5

The uncertainties around the planned visit of English Premier League giants, Arsenal FC to Nigeria looks finally rested as the Gunners on friday posted an official statement on the club’s website stating that they would be playing a pre-season game in Abuja on August 5, 2012.

“Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that the first-team squad will travel to Nigeria this summer for a pre-season match in Abuja on Sunday, August 5” the statement read in part.

In what will be the Gunners’ first match on Nigerian soil, Arsène Wenger’s side is billed to play at the 60,000 capacity Abuja National Stadium.

Sadly the proposed venue is currently an eye-sore and the stadium officials will have to hit the ground running if it hopes to see the proposed match materialise.

Recently the National Sports Commission said it will need as much as N75m to put the pitch back in its former lush green form.

For now, Arsenal’s opponents for the August 5 date is yet to be confirmed but the club hinted it will likely to be a leading African national team, perhaps the Super Eagles.

Back for good
Arsenal last visited Africa during a tour to South Africa in July 1993, and the club said it was returning to the Black continent as a result of the fantastic support which exists for the team, not only in Nigeria, but across the entire continent.

The visit to Nigeria will conclude an exciting pre-season tour schedule for Arsenal, who return to both China and Malaysia in July, following the success of last term’s Asia Tour.

The Asia leg of the tour starts in Kuala Lumpur, when the team plays against a Malaysia XI on Tuesday, July 24. The Gunners then travel to China, to play against Manchester City in Beijing on Friday, July 27, followed by a trip to Hong Kong for a match against Kitchee FC on Sunday, July 29.

Arsenal officials said further details regarding the match in Nigeria will feature on as soon as they are confirmed.

Former Super Eagles captain , Kanu Nwankwo made headlines while playing for the Gunners; winning several silverwares in his 5-years spell with the London club where he made 119 appearances scoring 30goals.
