UEFA Champions League: Bayern join Chelsea in final

It was a long road to the final for Bayern Munich as the German team had to play 120 minutes of football and even go into penalty shootout before edging out Real Madrid 3-1.

The reward for their spirited performance is a May 19 date at the Allianz Arena with London Club, Chelsea FC, in the finals of world’s biggest club competition; the UEFA Champions League.

Real Madrid had previously gone two goals ahead through a brace from Christiano Ronaldo who scored in the 6th minute via a penalty kick and added the second eight minutes later.

Bayern however got a lifeline in the 26th minute as they were awarded a penalty kick and was duly converted by former Real Madrid forward, Arjen Roben, to make the aggregate scores 2-2.

From then onwards, both teams laboured fruitlessly to get another goal as it was misses and near misses all through 90 minutes.

At the extra time period, both teams were cautious and the game thus went into penalty kicks.

Bayern took the first kick and was calmly converted by right back Alaba. Then Ronaldo, who until that minute the hero for Madrid step up to take his own kick and it was saved by Bayern goal keeper Neuer who guessed right and gets a strong hand to stop the ball from going into the net.

It was the other way round in the next two kicks as Bayern duo, Kroos and Lahm missed their kicks while Alonso got one but Sergio Ramos failed to convert his own kick. Bayern scored their last kick to make scores 3-1 and put paid to the ambition of Jose Mourinho’ s team of progressing.

For Bayern, Munich offers the opportunity of a dream final in front of 69,000 of their own supporters spurring them on to victory by singing Stern des Südens (Star of the South), the clubs anthem.

The final will be played at the Allianz Arena, Bayern’s home ground.
