Defending champions of the Nigeria Premier League, Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt on Saturday began their title defence on a winning note as they edged fierce rivals Sunshine stars of Akure by a lone goal.
The keenly contested game played at the Liberation stadium in Port Harcourt saw both teams evenly match themselves all through the first half and thereafter before the home team got a solitary goal through a wonderful strike by Saidu Mohammed in the 82nd minute of the match.
Attempts by Sunshine to level scores before the blast of the final whistle proved abortive as they failed to convert some of the begging chances that came their way in the course of the game.
Saturday’s 1-0 score line was the same result recorded when Sunshine last visited Port Hacourt in the 2010/11 season.
In other games, Shooting Stars of Ibadan survived an early scare as they fought back from a goal down to defeat Sharks of Port Harcourt by 2-1.
Sharks striker, Bright Ejike, had put the visitors ahead in the 47th minute before one of the new signings by 3SC, Talabi Olumankinde, levelled scores in 72nd minute.
The sizeable crowd at the Obafemi Awolowo stadium were however thrown into wild jubilation when Osagona Ighddaro scored what turned out to be the winning goal for the Oluyole Warriors in the 84th minute.
There were no major upsets in the week one games as there were no away victories in all the fixtures played.
Meanwhile the game between Kaduna united did not take place and has been rescheduled for Wednesday.
