Yakubu Aiyegbeni

Out-of-favour Super Eagles striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, was at his best again as his two goals proved vital in Blackburn Rovers 3-2 win over Manchester United at the Old Trafford.

United were hoping to overtake their neighbours, Manchester City, to return to the summit of the English Premier League but were denied by the sensational performance of Yakubu and his teammates who are currently deep in relegation battle.

Rovers grabbed a shock lead on 16 minutes, when Yakubu calmly stroke in from the penalty spot after Berbatov had hauled down Christopher Samba to concede a foul and on 51 minutes, United were left reeling when Yakubu bulldozed through some feeble defending to drive in his second and 12th goal of the season.

Expectedly United stepped up their game as two strikes off the boots of Bulgarian; Dimitir Berbatov ensured the reigning champions are levelled once more.

Blackburn Rovers however wrecked Sir Alex Ferguson’s 70th birthday celebrations by securing a stunning 80th minute winning goal through a goal mouth scramble that saw Grant Hanley gave Blackburn a decisive lead

Deserved victory
The defeat ruined United’s hopes of finishing 2011 on top of the league, and handed rivals Manchester City the opportunity to open up a three-point lead with a win at Sunderland on Sunday. The win was only Blackburn’s third of the season and their first victory away from home.

An elated Yakubu said after the match that his team deserved the win over united adding that such performance if sustained would ensure they finally escape relegation at the end of the season

“It was a good game for the team and we really deserve to win,”Yakubu noted. “The players were under pressure and also the coach so we needed to win, with more performances like this we can escape relegation,” he said.

Yakubu has been denied invitation to the national team after an unbelievable miss at the South Africa 2010 World when the Eagles were up against South Korea.

However Eagles gaffer, Stephen Keshi has hinted there might  be a recall for Yakubu soon once he maintains his goal-scoring form for his club.
