The top women’s seed at the 2018 US Open, Simona Halep, has been knocked out of the US Open.

Halep was left reeling after she was defeated by Kaia Kanepi on Day 1 of the last tennis Grand Slam of the year at Flushing Meadows.

Kanepi beat Halep 6-2 6-4 in 76 minutes. The Romanian, who won her first Grand Slam at the French Open in June, had no answer for the barrage of winners from Kanepi, who is currently ranked No.44 in the world.
