Two greats of the game – Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal -will be in the spotlight again as they contest the final of the 2015 Swiss Indoor Open tournament.
Federer has seven victories at this tournament while Nadal is chasing his first – that makes for intriguing viewing.
These two have met 33 times, since their first meeting on the Miami Masters hard courts in 2004. Federer, arguably the greatest tennis player of all time has fallen 23 times to the Spanish battler with both having gotten to the apex of the game at their respective peaks.
For Federer, another Grand Slam is an achievable feat and over the course of the season, he has showed that at 33 years of age, he still has a lot left in his tank.
For Nadal, it has been an underwhelming year, one fraught with injuries and bad form. He even fell out of the top 10 briefly during the season but has bounced back in the last two tournaments with the drive and tenacity that made him a popular No.1.

Now ranked seventh in the world, Nadal continues to build up for the 2016 season with solid performances – starting at the Shangai Masters, where he got to the semi-finals and now in Basel, where he has beaten Lukas Rosol, Grigor Dmitrov and Marin Cilic, each in three tight sets. Richard Gasquet was his semi-final opponent, a match he won 6-4 7-6.
Federer was happy for the tournament organisers because they could not have wished for a better finale. “This is the first time we play each other in Switzerland,” Federer said after his semi-final win over Jack Sock.
“It will be an amazing atmosphere tomorrow. This is a dream final for the fans and the tournament director.
“I’m very delighted. It’s a great feeling. You always hope at the beginning of the week that you will be part of the last two players there and have a chance to win the trophy again in your hometown. It’s nice to re-live that dream again this week,” he added.
On his part, Nadal said afterwards that he was happy at the way he had battled to victory over Gasquet. “I’m happy with the victory. It was a great match, a beautiful one I think. Both players played very good points. We played well and it was close. I’m very happy. It’s an important week for me,” Nadal added.
He will definitely be the happier if he can achieve a 763rd career win against Federer.
