The hopes of having Nigeria present male and female basketball teams at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is very much alive as the country’s women team, D’ Tigress secured third spot at the ongoing Afrobasket 2015 in Cameroon.
After a narrow defeat in the hands of the hosts, the D’Tigress dust themselves up on Saturday as they romped to a 65-55 victory over Angola in the fiercely contested third-place duel.
Knowing forehand that just the African Champions have an automatic ticket and the second and third place will be heading to an Olympic qualifying event, D’Tigress ensured they finished strong to remain in contention for a berth in Rio.
At half-time in Saturday’s game, Nigeria and Angola were tied at 31-31 points and the two teams were still inseparable going to the last quarter as scores stood at 55-55 points.
The last quarter turned to be the deciding point as the Nigerian Ladies pulled away; ending the game with a 10-point gap.
Already, Nigeria’s Men basketball team, D’Tigers are already through to the Olympics following their historic triumph in Tunisia.
