The 7 sporting events that caught our eyes last week

It was a weekend of interesting football results and the Rugby World Cup also produced some memorable matches but here are the seven things that caught our attention.

Hamilton equals Senna

Lewis Hamilton won the Japanese Grand prix to equal Ayrton Senna’s record of 41 race wins…Hamilton though is in a class of his own and should clinch his third title to join Senna, Sir Jackie Stewart and Niki Lauda in the pantheon of all-time greats, with races to spare

Messi out for 2 months

Lionel Messi was injured nine minutes into a La Liga encounter at the Nou Camp on Saturday and it has since been confirmed that it was a knee injury that will keep him out of action for at least eight weeks.

Sanchez has hattrick in three leagues

Alexis Sanchez returned to form for Arsenal on Saturday with a hat-trick against Leicester City and in the process became the first player to score three goals in a game in Serie A, La Liga and in the English Premier League. Sanchez’s first hat-trick came in Italy, when he was playing for Udinese, in February 2011.

Brady gets to 400 throws

Tom Brady has become just the fourth player in NFL to throw 400 career touchdown passes in the National Football League. The New England Patriots quarterback is behind the all-time leading thrower, Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos with 533 touchdown passes, followed by the retired Brett Favre on 508 and Dan Marino on 420.

One match witnessed three offside goals

The match between Tottenham Hotspurs and Manchester City ended 4-1 in favour of Spurs but Referee Mark Clattenburg will not be sleeping easy as three of the goals scored in the game were from offside positions. City’s first goal through Kevin De Bruyne was from an offside position. Spurs’ equaliser also came about when Walker was miles offside before his cross which led to the goal

Blatter + Platini under investigation

Sepp Blatter is under investigation – at this news we do not know whether to shout hallelujah or eureka. Blatter and UEFA president, Michel Platini are facing an investigation by Fifa’s ethics committee as Switzerland’s attorney general opened criminal proceedings against Blatter and his ’sin’ is that he signed a contract that is “unfavourable” to FIFA and also made a “disloyal payment” to Platini. So in one fell swoop, FIFA could be rid of Blatter and the likeliest person to take over his seat in Platini.

And finally…

Rugby player proposes after defeat

Roman Surugiu of Romania got down on his knee to propose to his girlfriend Alexandria on the Wembley pitch after Romania were roundly thrashed 44-10 by Ireland on Sunday. Surugiu came off the bench to play before a tournament record attendance of 89,267 even though not all the crowd was around to witness his proposal. So although he lost the match, he won a wife as Alexandria agreed to marry him despite the defeat…
