The management of El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club of Maiduguri on Thursday said it has appointed former Green Eagles defender, Kelechi Emeteole, as its new Technical Adviser.
The club’s Secretary, Tahiru Bala, told the News Agency of Nigeria that Emeteole would fill the vacuum created by new Super Eagles’ Assistant Coach, Salisu Yusuf.
“He has been appointed to rescue the team from its current poor and inconsistent performance, especially in the wake of Wednesday’s 0-3 loss to Rangers International FC of Enugu,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that El-Kanemi Warriors lost to Rangers in the Federation Cup’s quarter-finals on Wednesday in Abuja.
Emeteole, popularly called “Caterpillar’’, handled the club in 2011 when they earned a return to the Premier League after gaining promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL).
Bala said the club was hopeful that Emeteole’s appointment and laying off of eight players from the team would help it in bolstering its performance.
“These are coming as part of measures to return the Warriors to their rightful position,” he said.
The club secretary also disclosed that the club has recruited nine new players to beef up the team.
Bala further disclosed that the club’s owners, the Borno State Government, have redeemed the pledge of paying the players over 50 per cent of the 2013/2014 season sign on fees.
“This commendable effort by Governor Kashim Shettima will go a long way in returning the team to consistent winning ways,” he said.
