The Athletics Federation of Nigeria has postponed “indefinitely” the first leg of the 2015 Golden League Meet initially pencilled for May 9 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Though the AFN was silent on the reason(s) for the postponement, PREMIUM TIMES reliably gathered that the financial crisis that has plagued the Federation was one of the major factors that necessitated the postponement.
Olumide Bamiduro, the AFN Secretary General said a new date will be communicated to the public once the knotty issues are resolved, while also apologizing for the inconveniences the sudden postponement may have caused.
“The 1st AFN Golden League scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt, River State on 9th May 2015 has been postponed. A new date for this Golden League will be announced,” he said.
The Port Harcourt Golden League Meet is not the first event to be postponed on the AFN 2015 Calendar as the Federation late last month also moved the 2015 Warri Relays/CAA Grand Prix, themed ‘Inspiring Fresh Speeds of the Baton’ from the initially scheduled May 18, 2015 to July 24, 2015.
Meanwhile, aside Port Harcourt, Ile-Ife, Akure and Benin City have also been pencilled down to host different legs of the AFN Golden League this year.
