The Nigeria U20 team, the Flying Eagles, have sealed their place in the finals of the ongoing Africa Youth Championships having recorded a 2-0 win over West African rivals Ghana on Wednesday in the first semi-final match played at the Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium in Dakar.
A goal in each half was enough for the Flying Eagles team to maintain their unbeaten run at the 2015 AYC and stay on course to win Nigeria’s seventh AYC title.
It was Obinna Nwobodo through a “lucky header” in the 23rd minute that scored Nigeria’s first goal after the 18-year old Enugu Rangers player rose high to connect a cross from Captain Musa Mohammed and the effort was bundled in by the Ghana goalkeeper.
In the 32nd minute, Ghana U20 team, the Black Satellites came pretty close to restoring parity but they could only hit the bar with their effort.
The team did make further attempts but none of their efforts provided the needed result as Nigeria kept their slim lead into the second half.
The second half did start on a fast pace as the Flying Eagles tried to put the Ghanaians to the sword once and for all.
In the 53rd minute, Coach Manu Garba made a substitution bringing out Usman Sale and introduced Ibrahim Al-Hassan
Just before the hour mark Al Hassan was gifted a clear chance but his shot went wide.
The cushion goal Nigeria needed finally came in the 72nd minute when the Flying Eagles won a penalty kick and was again converted by Skipper Musa Muhammed.
The Flying Eagles will now wait for who their opponents will be between Mali and Senegal who play the other semi-final game on Thursday.
